At LIFE Male STEAM Academy, we believe strong reading skills open doors to confidence, knowledge, and future success. Our reading program takes a personalized approach to building proficiency, comprehension, and vocabulary development for every scholar.
Our reading specialist works closely with students to assess reading levels and provide targeted instruction that meets scholars where they are while challenging them to grow. Through this support, many students increase their reading levels by multiple grade levels within a single year.
Scholars also participate in our Book Club, where they engage culturally relevant texts through guided discussion and reflection. Students are currently reading The Crossover by Kwame Alexander and meet monthly with facilitators from the National Council of Negro Women and MAD DADS Pittsburgh to strengthen comprehension, expand vocabulary, and deepen engagement with the text. The experience culminates in a creative project where students design their own book covers.
Together with school-wide literacy initiatives and reading challenges, our goal is to develop confident, capable readers prepared for high school, college, and beyond.

LIFE Male STEAM Academy is a tuition-free public charter school serving young men in grades 6–11, where students engage in a dynamic, future-focused education rooted in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. There is no cost to parents to enroll, as enrollment for Pennsylvania charter school students is covered by taxpayer dollars. Enrollment is now open for the 2026–27 school year, making this the perfect time for families to explore all that LIFE Male STEAM Academy has to offer.
